Walter Thompson’s Mick Hamm awarded ‘Workforce Champion’ Leading Lights Award for 2023

27th November 2023

On Monday 27 November, the 2023 winners of the prestigious Considerate Constructors Scheme’s (CCS) national Leading Lights Awards were announced at an eagerly anticipated awards ceremony at the Lancaster Hotel, central London.

The ceremony showcased the exemplary work of UK and Irish construction organisations, their sites and individuals – celebrating their outstanding efforts in going above beyond the CCS Code of Considerate Practice.

Over 350 guests attended the glittering award ceremony to celebrate 51 construction sites and organisations, and 12 individuals who, in their projects and initiatives, have raised the bar in being a Considerate Constructor.

The awards categories reflected the three core focus areas of the CCS’s Code: Respecting the Community, Caring for the Environment and Valuing the Workforce.

Among the sites, organisations and individuals recognised at the event, 11 were crowned Overall Winners and Individual Champions, for the outstanding impact and value of their initiatives.

Walter Thompson’s Mick Hamm was the winner of the Workforce Champion Leading Lights Award working for Exemplar Health Care on their new state of the art Care Home, Tees Grange in Stockton.

Mick Hamm Project Manager for Walter Thompson Contractors was awarded for his outstanding work with charity Clean Slate Solutions, which helps with the rehabilitation of ex-offenders back into the workplace.

Mick gave this often-marginalised group the chance to gain meaningful work in the construction industry by providing the training to develop new skills and gain qualifications, giving them a purpose and sense of self-worth.

His first ex-offender is now a labourer and Mick hopes to support many more. By connecting the charity with recruitment agencies, he aims to remove the stigma of recruiting ex-offenders and boost the availability of work placements. Mick’s sterling efforts will help break the cycle of crime and support the demand for skilled workers in the industry.

Walter Thompson’s are proud of their involvement with the Considerate Constructor Scheme and have been a Partner member for the past 17 years. During this time the company have been awarded over 20 National Site Awards for excellent standards of consideration towards their neighbours, workforce and environment and have previously won the Most Considerate Site Award in the UK on two occasions.

The CCS scheme was introduced in 1999 to recognise and reward the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made toward improving the image of

construction. The CCS scheme looks at measures companies have put in place to be more considerate to neighbourhoods, their workforce and the environment.

The Leading Lights Awards were created to celebrate organisations that have significantly raised the bar in being a considerate constructor, not just by following, but by going above and beyond the Code. The Leading Lights Awards recognise and showcase innovative and impactful work irrespective of a project’s value and an organisation’s size.
